I was sitting down this evening watching television when I stumbled accross Jesse Venturas new television show, Conspiracy Theory. Not only is this show shown on the television medium, but I found it quite interesting to note that much of the stuff he says can easily be contradicted. He goes on a hunt around the world to track down individuals who have information to back up his theories on things, or theories that he has heard about. By him doing so, I feel as if he is carrying out the confirmation bias because he is hunting down individuals that will back up the conspiracy that he is hunting. Not once did i see him find someone who disproved of the theory, everyone he found was promoting the particular conspiracy he was researching. For instance, I saw him trying to hunt down a guy to give his side of the story in regards to global warming being a way for many powerful people to make more money and take over the world. The only guy I saw him talk to was a journalist who came up with this conspiracy. Overall, I think the show is BS but the guy does have some interesting arguments to back up these absurd conpiracy theories.

  1. I've never seen that show before, but I'd definitely agree with you on his use of confirmation bias. I'm pretty sure that plenty of people who share his views would watch this show which would ultimately contribute to their confirmation bias as well. Either way, this show would still probably be pretty interesting for those of us who may have different perspectives on conspiracy theories because it would give us a chance to look at the event in another light.

  2. I also have never seen the show. I completely agree that this seems to be a confirmation bias. But, unfortunately, many of these crime shows are like this: unrealistic.

  3. I watch a episode or two last season. This show was intriguing, but I do agree with you its a little far fetch. However some of his research is true and I've seen articles and news media regarding some of his theories. Im not saying I dont believe what he is saying but im saying he takes it to the extreme. Anyways if it were true I don't thing the government or whoever would allow to televise his show..

  4. I think conspiracy theories are interesting, but almost all of them are complete BS. In my experience i've found that the majority of people who believe in these 'theories' are typically ignorant of the facts and I agree, definitely carry out the confirmation bias. Believing in conspiracy theories is just one symptom of one's gullibility. The same guys convincing you that Bush blew up the World Trade Center are the same one's who swear that they've legitimately seen/heard/felt ghosts, UFOs, and bigfoot.

But, after saying all this, I have to admit, in all seriousness, Jesse Ventura is one badass cool dude.

  5. Haha! I caught two episdoes last season. Yes, it's definitely confirmation bias. However, some of the things he presents are facts but then he provides further evidence by talking to other conspiracists.

Unfortunately, sometimes even the educated fall for this crap. I had a former graduate student say that the Obama administration was putting hormones in tap water to sterilize women.

I agree with Mike N. though that Jesse is badass.
